Today, the two communities offer a supportive environment where nearly 16,000 people touched by diabetes can connect with each other, hold informed discussions and share their experiences.

Comunidad para Hispanos con Diabetes Celebra Un Año de Crecimiento

PALO ALTO, CA: 6 de Agosto, 2008 – EsTuDiabetes.com, una comunidad en Internet para personas de habla hispana afectadas por la diabetes, celebra su primer aniversario con más de 900 miembros.

EsTuDiabetes.com fue lanzada en agosto del 2007 por el ingeniero venezolano Manuel Hernández. Durante Julio del 2008, la comunidad creció casi un 30%, con más de 75 mil páginas vistas por miembros procedentes de México, Venezuela, España, Argentina, Estados Unidos, Perú, Colombia y Chile, entre otros países.

“La comunidad nos mantiene unidos a pesar de las distancias geográficas,” comentó Hernández. “El apoyo que los miembros se brindan mutuamente es una de las cosas más importantes que EsTuDiabetes ofrece a quienes vivimos afectados por diabetes.”

Unirse a EsTuDiabetes.com es gratis. Los miembros de la comunidad pueden agregar una foto y compartir su historia individual en su página personal de manera sencilla. Cada miembro puede participar en discusiones sobre diabetes en el Foro, escribir en su blog personal, compartir fotos y videos y entrar en contacto con otras personas con quienes comparten algo en común: otros padres de niños con diabetes, mexicanos con diabetes o personas interesadas en organizar actividades para el Día Mundial de la Diabetes, por citar tres ejemplos.

This is a PSA from Kris Freeman (Olympic skier and Type 1 diabetic) that gives tips and tricks on what diabetics can do to be prepared for an emergency or natural disaster. Kris stresses the importance of having on-hand:

An emergency kit that contains basics like a radio, flashlights, batteries, whistles,food, water and a list of emergency contacts

At least one week of supplies in a central locations

A few ice packs to keep insulin cool if you are on the go

A kit of diabetes supplies, including blood testing supplies, health insurance cards, copies of your prescriptions, a glucagon kit and fast-acting carbohydrates.

In this podcast, we talk about two options to deal with your excess supplies of insulin that is still good to use, so that it doesn't get wasted.

1) iPump.org: This is a nonprofit whose mission is to provide critical, temporary financial assistance and free supplies to diabetics in need of all ages throughout the United States. They accomplish this through donations from those of use who may have spare supplies sitting around.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I am a member of the board of iPump.org since May 2008.)

2) Insulin For Life: they collect excess unused insulin vials that can still be used and distribute them throughout developing countries in coordination with local centers and International Diabetes Federation's "Life For a Child" program.

This page lists their collection centers where you can mail your insulin. Also, for members living outside the US, this another place you can send your excess supplies (specially strips).

Today we passed the 3,000 member mark in www.tudiabetes.com, a social network for people touched by diabetes.

3,000 folks touched by diabetes. 3,000 people that are sharing with others about they go through, about what their loved ones go through every single day... it's quick to say but we all know it's not quick to go through.

This family keeps growing and the warm and cozy feel is still here. Each of you make it possible, when you welcome a new member, when you answer people's questions about diabetes in the forum, when you share a story, a photo or a video. A diabetes community that feels like one big family.

We met Noah in Boston and interviewed him, in the company of his parents, while riding the swan boats over by the Public Garden. Noah is a very smart and fun kid!

He has type 1 diabetes and enjoys Legos, riding his bike and gardening. His favorite subjects are Social Studies and Science. He has a great nurse at his school and he loves his mom and dad!

He would like to see a cure for diabetes so that the world will have people who once had diabetes. He closed by saying "Peace!"

After evaluating suggestions from members of TuDiabetes.com, we decided to explore the options that most members that participated seemed to be comfortable with. Though we still are looking for more ways to continue to sustain the community, we are happy to share with everyone the news about a new partnership, that is helping us kick start the labor of the Diabetes Hands Foundation.

In early February, a guy by the name of Michael approached us at the San Francisco Diabetes Expo in Santa Clara. It was very surreal to find out he represented LifeScan, the makers of the OneTouch meters, specially after we had attempted for many weeks in 2007 to find out who we could speak with there to explore the possibility of a partnership.

After two and half months and a LOT of work and trips to San Francisco and one trip to L.A., we have chosen to start a partnership with OneTouch, licensing to them the concept and the name of the "Word In Your Hand" project that came to life within the TuDiabetes.com community in 2007.

The concept of using a word to describe what diabetes means to people resonated with them and they will be working with us to support the "Word In Your Hand" project and find ways to grow it.

Another great video by David Hite, PhD. Here, he goes into a bit more detail about the 5M's of Diabetes Management. The last "M" stands for Motivation.

Arguably motivation is something that comes from within, but when it doesn't quite happen, TuDiabetes is a great place to go to and participate, so you can share your concerns and what are those things that are making it hard for you to stay motivated so you can better manage your diabetes.
